Carpe Diem

As I am writing this, I’ve got about 4 more hours left. That’s right, in just 4 short hours I’ll be another year older. Where has all the time gone?!?
I am a huge fan of Facebook. I keep up with friends from all over the world with a simple click of the mouse. I have a lot of my friends from high school on my Facebook. They are all so old! It’s like I should still be 17 and they are all old. What happened?
And the problem…the older I get, the faster time goes by. Isn’t it weird how that happens, but when we were young time would move like a slug covered with an entire salt shaker full of salt (seriously, try it sometime).
OK…here’s the deal. My daughter is 3. In 15 years she’ll be 18 (that’s the extent of my mathematical expertise). If those 15 years go by anywhere near as fast as these past 15 years…Wow! I don’t want to come to the end of these next 15 years and have to sit and write on my blog about how fast that time flew by. And I don’t want to have to think about all the missed opportunities I had.
I’m not talking about just the time to be with her and do fun things. I love those thing and I want those things, I really do! But more than anything else in the world I want my daughter to know what it is to be a godly person. I want her to be deeply and intimately in love with Jesus…even more–a lot more–than I want to do fun things.
God, may I use the time You’ve given me with Isabel wisely.
How about you? Are you seizing the day?

Yeah . . . you’ll turn around twice and Isabel will be a freshman . . . like has happened with Matthew. I’ve really had the same kind of Carpe Diem thoughts lately. I realize that our window of opportunity to be a daily presence in Matthew’s life is going by quickly. We’re really hit and miss with family devotions, more miss than hit, actually, this semester. We’ve tried using the devotionals available at http://www.lifeway.com/heartconnex, and they’re really pretty good–kinda cheesy sometimes–but the content is solid. Do you have any other devotional book suggestions for families with teens and pre-teens?

I can totally understand what you mean. My baby is a senior and I have a 23 year old. Am I old????? I don’t think so…. We have to look at it as another chapter in our family’s life . We always say we hope we have done right by our children and trained them up in the way they should go. That is our constant prayer!! I can remember both my kids being three( very treasured times). You will too. I hope we can always try hard to seize the day. We are in the process of trying to get a devotional time started with our kids in Thessalonians, seems to be the interest of our kids during these times. Do you have any suggestions ?

I just found your blog today when I was looking up Brian’s email. I am so glad I stumbled on it. I too feel that time is passing so quickly with my kids. They are already 5 and almost 2. It’s great to have such wonderful friends to ask for advice, like Sharon and Wanda. I am always wondering if I am truly “training them up in the way they should go.” I know there is more I need to be doing to install that love of Jesus. I get so caught up in day to day hassles that I miss the big picture of spending that quality time with my kids. I liked what you said about Isabel being in love with Jesus. I want that for my kids too.
