Youth “Bring One” Party This Sunday

So this coming Sunday, February 7, there is a major championship game for a major sport that is not baseball or basketball. The game will begin at 5:30 pm and will be shown on a major television network. Now, the governing body of this major sport has set some pretty strict limits on what can be used publicly in reference to this game (i.e. it would be a copyright infringement if I used the actual name of this game on this website…but it rhymes with “pooper roll”).

Anyhoo…our students will be getting together for the purpose of watching this game on Sunday at 5:15 at the home of Ricky and Wanda Lawless. We will be eating hamburgers and hotdogs. All girls that come need to bring one bag of chips and one dip that goes with the chosen bag of chips. (I would be eternally grateful if a couple of you girls would come with a hot crock-pot full of queso!). All the guys that come need to bring one batch of brownies or cookies.

The name “Bring One” was chosen because there are a few “ones” that everyone needs to bring: Bring one snack (see the instructions in the above paragraph); Bring one can of food (for our local food ministry); Bring $1 (for our student ministry’s Compassion International sponsor child); Bring one friend (if possible…more than one would be okay too).

If you have any other questions about this party feel free to give me a call in the church office.

saw you at the pole rally

saw youThis Wednesday is See You At The Pole day. This is a day where millions of students all over the world meet at school flagpoles and pray together for their campuses, their teachers, their communities, and their local and federal governments. I really encourage you to make sure your kids are at school a little early (7:30) to participate in See You At The Pole this Wednesday. The prayer time is entirely student led. A few area youth ministers will be at the middle school and high school campuses with donuts and juice and to offer support.

Then Wednesday night our youth group will be going to First Baptist in Lubbock for the Saw You At The Pole rally. We will be leaving at 6:00 from the church parking lot. The event is free, but they will be taking a love offering. Runks will be speaking and Pearl Merchant will be leading in worship.  We will be getting home between 9:30 and 10:00. Encourage your kids to be here and bring a friend!

Youth Missions Week

We had an awesome start to our missions week today! 12 students showed up this morning. We begin cleaning up around the house of a lady in our community who really needed some help! We will work at this lady’s house again tomorrow. We also hauled off three loads of limbs from trees that had been trimmed at the Baptist Student Ministry building on the SPC campus.

Tomorrow we will meet at the church at 9:45 in the morning and work till about 2:00 again.

One Incredible Day

Yesterday was an incredible day for me! It was, of course, one of my favorite days of the year…opening day for Major League Baseball. And my favorite team, the Rangers, kicked some Cleveland Indian tail (which was awesome)! And also my favorite college basketball team left no doubt about who is the best team in the NCAA last night! BUT…WHAT REALLY MADE THE DAY ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE DIDN’T ACTUALLY HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH BASEBALL OR BASKETBALL.

Yesterday I went to Bonita Park to check out the camp facilities for youth camp. And it was beautiful! The facilities are extremely nice, but offer a touch of nostalgia, reminding me of youth camp when I was growing up! But the most incredible thing during the day was thinking about all the really cool things God is going to do in the lives of our teenagers during those 5 days of camp. I just got so excited walking around the campground praying and thinking ahead 8 weeks about everything that is going to take place. If you haven’t registered your teenager (and their friends) for camp yet, don’t put it off any longer!

San Antonio Youth Trip

One of the things I love most about youth ministry is having fun with students, so every once in a while its a blast to get away just to have some fun. Last summer we went to the DFW area, caught a Rangers game, went to Six Flags, and stayed at a really cool hotel with its very own water park. This summer we will be going to San Antonio!!! I don’t have all the details worked out yet, but here’s the plan:

Date: July 15-18

Location: San Antonio (we’ll be staying at the Holiday Inn Riverwalk)

Activities: River Walk, Schlitterbahn, Fiesta Texas (maybe), Tubing the river (maybe)

Cost: Not nailed down yet, but probably $210…this will cover a charter bus, hotel room, tickets to parks
